What Is an EKG?
An electrocardiogram, commonly called an EKG or ECG, measures the electrical signals that control your heartbeat. The test is painless, takes only a few minutes to perform, and provides valuable information about how your heart is functioning.
An EKG may help evaluate:
- Heart rate
- Heart rhythm
- The electrical activity of your heart
- Signs that additional cardiac evaluation may be needed

When We Recommend an EKG Screening
Not every urgent care visit requires an EKG. When appropriate, our providers may recommend one to gather additional information about your heart and help guide your diagnosis or treatment plan.
An on-site EKG may be recommended if you're experiencing:
Chest discomfort
Dizziness or lightheadedness
Shortness of breath when a cardiac cause needs to be considered
Heart palpitations
An irregular or racing heartbeat
Fainting or feeling like you may faint
An EKG may also be performed as part of certain medical evaluations, including:
- Preoperative testing
- Employment-related medical evaluations, when required
- Sports participation evaluations, when clinically appropriate

In addition to evaluating certain symptoms, an EKG may be recommended as part of specific medical evaluations when requested or clinically appropriate.
Some surgical procedures require an EKG before surgery. As part of your preoperative evaluation, we can perform an on-site EKG when requested to help complete the information needed before your procedure.
Certain occupations require cardiac testing as part of an employment medical evaluation. When an EKG is requested as part of these requirements, our team can perform the test during your visit.
For some athletes, an EKG may be recommended based on their medical history, symptoms, or participation requirements. Our providers determine whether an EKG is appropriate as part of the overall medical evaluation.
What to Expect During Your Visit
Every patient's symptoms and medical history are unique. Whether you're visiting us because of new symptoms or need an EKG as part of another medical evaluation, we'll take the time to understand your concerns before recommending testing.
Your visit begins with a discussion about your symptoms, medical history, current medications, and any relevant family history. Your provider will perform a focused physical examination to determine whether an on-site EKG will provide helpful information as part of your evaluation.
If an EKG is recommended, it can be performed during your visit.
The test:
Is quick and non-invasive
Records the electrical activity of your heart
Does not involve needles
Typically takes only a few minutes
Since the test is performed on-site, there's no need to schedule a separate appointment at another facility.
Once your EKG is complete, your provider will review the results together with your symptoms, physical examination, and medical history.
Depending on your evaluation, your care plan may include:
An explanation of your EKG results
Treatment recommendations when appropriate
Immediate referral to the emergency department if your symptoms or EKG findings require urgent care
Follow-up with your primary care provider
Referral to a cardiologist if additional evaluation is recommended

Know When Emergency Care Is Needed
An on-site EKG can be an important part of evaluating certain symptoms, but it is not a substitute for emergency medical care.
Call 911 or go directly to the nearest emergency room if you experience:
Severe or persistent chest pain
Difficulty breathing
Signs of a stroke, including sudden weakness, numbness, facial drooping, or difficulty speaking
Loss of consciousness
Severe dizziness accompanied by chest pain
Any other life-threatening symptoms
